Craig Wood

Craig Wood

In 2023, GD Media partnered with Craig Wood, the first triple amputee to sail solo across the Pacific Ocean. Our role was to design and deliver a documentary capturing his journey – from preparation in Mexico, to footage at sea, to his victorious arrival in Japan.

This case study outlines the project approach, challenges, and outcomes, providing a model for how ambitious film projects can be managed successfully.

  1. Defining the Challenge

Filming a solo sailor mid-Pacific posed unique difficulties:

    • Geography: Crews couldn’t accompany Craig across the ocean.
    • Continuity: Multiple locations (Mexico, Pacific Ocean, Japan) had to feel like one seamless story.
    • Authenticity: The narrative required both professional-quality visuals and Craig’s personal perspective.

Every project begins by identifying obstacles so solutions can be built into the production plan.

  2. Pre-Production and Training

We began in Mexico, documenting Craig preparing his boat. Filming included:

    • Technical preparation (equipment checks, rigging, supplies).
    • Personal moments that revealed Craig’s mindset before departure.

To address filming at sea, we trained Craig to:

    • Use lightweight cameras.
    • Frame and stabilise shots.
    • Protect gear from saltwater.
    • Record personal reflections in real time.

Empowering subjects with the right tools extends the filmmaker’s reach into otherwise inaccessible environments.

  3. Production Across Continents

    • Mexico: On-site coverage of Craig’s preparation.
    • Pacific Ocean: Self-filmed content, authentic and raw.
    • Japan: Arrival and completion of the crossing, capturing emotional impact without scripted direction.

Drone footage and multiple camera setups added scale and cinematic value where possible.

Structuring production across stages allows for a complete story arc, even when filming conditions vary.

  4. Post-Production Process

Editing required careful integration of diverse footage. Key focus areas:

    • Consistency: Colour grading and sound balancing across sources.
    • Narrative flow: Blending Craig’s raw footage with professionally shot material.
    • Emotional pacing: Building tension, release, and triumph.

Post-production is not just technical—it’s storytelling, transforming footage into an experience.

  5. Outcomes

    • A compelling documentary that honours Craig’s resilience.
    • High engagement potential across digital platforms.
    • A model for producing media under extreme logistical constraints.
    • Flexibility and creativity are essential when filming outside controlled environments.
    • Training subjects can create irreplaceable content from otherwise inaccessible locations.
    • Coordinating international shoots requires careful planning, communication, and patience.
  6. Why This Matters for Clients

At GD Media, we specialise in videography, photography, and content creation across Somerset and the South West. Whether producing a local business film in Taunton or an international documentary, our approach is consistent:

Craig Wood’s Pacific Crossing proved that even the most ambitious stories can be told with the right mix of planning, creativity, and determination.

Let’s get to work

Tell us what you need filming.

Brand film, social content, an event, a drone shot you can’t get any other way — give us the brief and we’ll tell you straight how we’d shoot it and what it costs. We’re a small, experienced crew, not the cheapest option in the county, and the work shows it.
